She’s Still Here

What happened to that girl

Who followed all the rules

Who did everything right

She's nowhere in sight

She always was good

And she understood

That you get what you give

So that's how she lived

She gave and she gave

And then gave some more

Until one day

She was drained to her core

She tried to reach out

She needed a hand

But those that she gave to

Surely had their own plan

So she lay on the floor

Feeling weak and afraid

With tears she looked back

At this life that she made

All the stories she heard

Of happiness and bliss

Seemed to elude her

Leaving Life's unkind kiss

So she gathered her strength

And walked out the door

She built walls around her

And she changed from before

Bitter and angry

Sad and afraid

She hardened her heart

Her protection she made

She kept herself distant

Pushed people away

It was pure survival

She knew they'd never stay

Still she cared for each person

She happened to pass

And offered her hand

In friendships that last

She wore her bright smile

Like a badge she had earned

Though in love she had failed

In life she had learned

She forgave those who hurt her

But she never forgot

Though her heart had been hardened

God's Grace she was taught
